Arising out of a quarrel between the two J.Ps.; rioters, crossing the river trom Llandygwye to Manor Deify in boats, assaulted cpl’s house, and, though he was sick in bed, bound him with ropes and dragged him to Llechryd Bridge, on pretence of treason before a J.P. who however set him free; assault upon a watchman upon the same bridge. The misdemeanours of Jno Birt as a J.P. include the bringing of a false charge of treason against Jno Lewis and his servant for being concerned in the rebellion of the Earl of Essex and committing them in irons in Cardigan jail. Defs aver that the binding of cpl was carried out at the request of the petty constable of the neighbourhood.

    • ODNB Lougher, Robert (d. 1585), ecclesiastical lawyer by Martin Ingram - STAC 5/L10/6, STAC 5/L10/40, STAC 5/L40/21, STAC 5/M17/6. “Lougher married Elizabeth, granddaughter of John Rastell, the printer. They had three sons, John (the heir), Thomas, and Robert, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Jane, and Lettice. Lougher's nuncupative will was made at Tenby (where he was afterwards buried) on 3 June 1585, and proved six days later. Unfortunately his fortune attracted the predatory attention of a certain Rice Morgan, who claimed to have been betrothed to Elizabeth before Lougher married her; his attempts to force the widow into a union with him were foiled only with the assistance of Star Chamber.”

For the relevant file, see STAC 5/S79/34) where they gave it for the plaintiff, and for other some who were neither present, nor gave their voices against the plaintiff yet he returned their voices for the said Gardons and for haleing and pulling other some by the cloaks to pass against the plaintiff for which disorder he was committed and fined at £20.
