To the Quenes most excellent Maiestie
In most humble wise complayninge shewethe and informeth unto your highnes your humble subiect Thomas Bates of Morpeth in the Countie of Northumb[er]land gent That wheareas by an estatute made in a Parliament holden at Westm[inster] in the Countie of Middlesex in Anno xxxij of the raigne of our late soveraigne Lorde Kinge Henry the eigth Father unto your highnes yt was inacted and ordeyned by the comon Counsaill of the Realme that noe man shoulde bargaine buy or sell or by any ways or meanes obteyne gett or have any pretensed right or tytle or shoulde take promysse or covenant to have or gett any right or tytle of any parsone or p[ar]sones whatsoever in or to any Mannors Landes tenementes or hereditamentes Excepte such parsone or parsons whiche soe shall sell bargayne geve grannt covenant or promysse the same his Anncestor or he or they by whome he claymeth the same were in possession of the same or of the revercon or remaynder thereof or have taken the Rentes or proffyttes thereof by the space of one hole yeare next before the said bargayne and sale covenant grannt and promysse made uppon payne that he whiche shoulde make suche promysse sale bargayne grannt or agrement should forfeyte the hole value of the Landes tenementes or heredytamentes soe bargayned and solde promysed grannted or Covenanted against the forme of the Statute And that the buyar or taker the same knowinge shall likewise forfeyte the value of the Landes tenementes and hereditamentes soe by him bought or taken as is aforesaid Thone haulf of whiche forfeyture shoulde be unto your highnesse and thother haulf to him that wolde sue for the same in any of your highnes Courtes of Record by Accon Byll playnt or Informacoen in which sute noe essoyne proteccion wager of Lawe nor Iniunction should lye or be allowed as in the said Acte amonge other thinges more fully ys ....yned Soe ys yt most gracious soveraigne that one Cuthbert Horseleye of Horseley in the Countie of Northumb[er]land Justice of peace within your maiesties said Countie and stuarde of the Lordeshipp of Morpeth and thereby a greate learner and medler of and in dyvers broken and surmysed tytles not regardinge that aforesaid only of a malycious purpose to dysturbe the quyet possession of your said Orator which hathe longe tyme contynued and to dryve him to sute and expences in the lawe sence the date of the said Acte that ys to saye the ixth day of Apryll in the eight yeare of your highnes raigne at Morpethe aforesaid procured p[ur]chased bought and tooke of one George Chalenor of Morpeth aforesaid yeoman one Close and one Dovecote to the value of xxxli and better, of whiche said Dovecote and Close the said George Chalenor nor any of his Anncestors nor any of them whose estate he claymed weare in possessyon of the same nor of any parcell thereof nor of the Revercon nor Remaynder thereof nor the proffittes or Rents thereof tooke by the space of one hole yeare next before the said bargayne soe had and made In consyderacon whereof may hit please your maiestie the p[re]mysses considered to grannt unto your said humble Subiect your most gracious several wryttes of Subpena to be directed aswell unto the said Cuthbert Horseley as the said George Challener comanndinge them thereby to be and p[er]sonally to appere at a certayne day and under a certaine paine therein to be lymited before your most excellent maiestie in your highnes Court of Starre Chamber than and there to annswere to the p[re]mysses And further to abide suche order and dir[e]ccon therin as to your highnes shall seme most consonante and agreable to equitie and good conscience And your said Orator shall dayly pray to a[lm]ightie god for the prosperous p[re]servacon of your highnes raigne in all felycitie longe to contynue.
