Transcribed by Robert J. Mueller

1563 Aug 30 – Edward Baesh to the Marquis of Winchester

My Singuler good Lorde I have received yor honors L’re of the xxviijth of awgust, and touching the xxiiijm bisquet that shoulde remayne at portismouth of Mr abbingtons chardge, The same beyng suche as I sawe, is so Ill, that our marynrs will not eatt it, for uppon the landage of it at portismouth from Newhaven I gave hym myne advice to cull it and whether he did so or not I ca’ not tell. And if it be at this p[re]sent good (as I moche dowte) yet it was made of musty wheat, and baked not to contynue for the Se[es] for it was made only to service the victuelling of the Town of Newhaven.

The shippes nowe appointed to contynue on the Sees ar Demynished ixc men. So as the Chardge is not grete. and nowe they ar at portysmouth uppon a Revictuellinge. albeit as they shall serve up’on the narrow sees. I have writen to Mr Hannyngton to helpe to Confirme the xvm bisquett that is there but the price is nowe to be made certayn to hym by yor lordshipps L’re, otherwise he will not deale with it, by his good will.

And for the xiiijm bisquett at London to be consumed at Jillingham, The nomber of men nowe ther will not spend it before easter, and I have a remayne at London of my p[ro]vision as henry p[ar]ker made yor Lordshi[p] xvij of xlijm iiijc ll bisquett, whiche is reason be firste spent before any other mans p[ro]vision, and grete losse ca’not chose but to growe therin, wherin p[ar]ker hath made yor Lordshipps prvye.

Mr Abbington coulde be contented to have me to deal wt his good and Ill p[ro]visions by the poll, wherwth I Liked not to medle for dyverse causes aswell for that the losse shuld not be demaunded by my accompt. [f.86v] yf he coulde have byn contented to have used myne advice for the wheate and malt at portysmouth there should not have followed suche losse as is Like. yet as a Co’en [comen?] p[er]son I could have byn contented to have gyven asmoche for that as the beste prce [price?] of the mrkett [market?] but he went abouts to chardge me wth the receipte and then to leave me to the danger of peticion for the Losse, he hathe bothe wheat and malt yet at portysmoth and because my man was contented to look to hit he thinketh herafter to chardge me wth the same, wherin he is deceaved onles I do take it by price and so for monye, because by my fellowes thofficers of the admyralte I was so appointed to medle and not otherwise, assuringe yor honor the srvice by land sodeynly appeased, and the chardg now by See not grett, bothe Mr abbington and I must be humble peticionrs to yor good lordshippe.

I thought it my duety to put yor honor in Remembrance there is nowe at portismouth in v of the ffrenche shippes that cam from newehaven. c waies or therabots of baye salte wch if the srvice of newhaven hade contynued should have served for Mr abbingtons chardg and nowe the Salte lyethe there one shippbounde and will consume aswell by water as otherwise and no man takethe any chardge. It may please yor lordshipp to write yor L’re to Mr holstock comptroller of the admyralte to delyver to me the salte a lane(?) by measure wch I will receive and to see the quenes mati aunswered: hit will els be Loste. or if it should be brought to London, there wilbe as good a mrkett made of it, considering the freight and chardges, as was of the norsk malte.

[f.87] I humbly beseche yor lordshipp to p[ar]don my ovr bold wryteng and so resting alwaye at yor honorable com’aundme’t, I do beseche almighty god longe to please yor honor. writen at Stanstend the Last of awgust 1563.

This b’rer shall attend for yr lordshipps aunswer.

Yr good lordshipps most humbly to co’mand

Edward Baesh
