Richard was forced to provide sureties of good behaviour sub pena 100 marks and £20 each of his mainpernors; also, Richard had letters patent of Rich II directing him to seize carts etc. to carry harness and jewels of Rich II from London to Lichfield and for this purpose on 30 Dec. 1398 at Haringey Park Richard seized John Haddy's cart and extorted 20s from him to permit him to keep his cart; and on the same day Richard seized another cart from William Bleaheley and extorted 6s 8d from him to permit him to keep his cart but took it anyway; also at Westminster on 16 March 1399 Richard together with other unknown armed malefactors of Cheshire and in the entourage of Rich II with the encouragement of Richard lay in wait for Thomas Ruydyng in order to maim and kill him and continuing this waylaying for 1 week and then kept Thomas imprisoned in the church of St Margaret the Virgin (St Margaret of Antioch) with the doors closed until he paid 9 marks 6s 8d and 3 pollaxes worth 10s and during a Loveday Richard and his malefactors attempted to kiss him, Thomas for fear of his life dared not to go about his business for 1 week, and he was force to swear that he would not sue for the fine and trespass done to him; also that Richard bought tenements in Westminster held in fee farm so that he should be impanelled as a juror in assizes and other inquisitions to oppress and destroy his neighbours through fear unless they pay him a fine to be acquitted; and Richard is a common maintainer of false accusations in Middlesex and he is the root of all lies in Middlesex; and his is an imaginer 'of many fals wyles and of al Midd' chef caster of gyles'; and contrary to the Statute 13 Rich II, St.3 they maintained and sustained false complaints between king and party and party and party and on 12 May 1400 and at other times in Westminster and Westminster Hall, Knightsbridge and at other places in Middlesex maintained the suit between John Sadler and William Parker for trespass heard in the King's Bench and Richard and Roger at Knightsbrige and Hendon rode to various jurors (Robert Orchard and others) and bribed them.
