1350: H1350 A: Sussex. John Waleys chivaler v. William de Warenne together with John Seintpier. Trespass and imprisonment for 8 weeks and three days, either in 1336 or 1338. Warenne pleaded that the king in 1338 commissioned John de Warenne earl of Surrey, Richard earl of Arundell, William de Clynton earl of Huntingdon, John de Moubray and John de Hampton to enforce the statute of Northampton in the counties of Hamphire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Surrey, Sussex, and Kent. They received reports that Waleys had an armed gang of wrongdoers who imprisoned people until they made fines or redemptions; one of the victims was one Richard Page. Warenne ordered the relevant sheriffs to arrest Waleys, but they would not. So the commissioners commissioned Warenne to arrest Waleys by a commission dated 10 August 1338. He thus arrested him and took him to Lewes Castle. [1] H1350 B: Lincolnshire. It was presented in E1349 that whereas John Crispyn de Eltham and William Wright de Eltham were captured for divers felonies and robberies and put in the jail of Lincoln castle, in 1348 they burgled the jail and fled to the church of St Paul in the bailley of the castle and then to the brothers of the order of St Augustine, Lincoln, and then at night they fled from there also. Richard de Maundeville parson of Roxby received them into his home at Roxby knowing them to be felons. And John Crispyn and Thomas Crispyn and other divers wrongdoers came with force and arms against the king's peace with armed force in mode of war at Burton Stather to the home of Nicholas Hustwayt and assaulted him and with arrows and fire were set to burn him in his home until Nicholas for fear of death rendered himself to them and made fine with them in 1345. Knowing all this, Richard de Maundevill rector of Roxby received them anyway. Earlier it had also been presented that Maundevill, rector, had raped Cecilia daughter of Geoffrey Horne de Roxby at the woods in Berghton. [2] E1352 A: Bedfordshire. Presented that (a) in 1341 John Trayly and his men after sunset and by premeditated anger attacked merchants and mercers of Biccleswade on their way the fair of Elstow; (b) from there they went to the fair of Elstow with many others and with premeditated malice at the fair of Elstow attacked Hugh Bodenho and many others; (c) in 1344 John Trayly and others went to the manor of the Lady Fitz Richard at Sweflesho and with armed men to a great number and took her to the manor of John de Gyse against her will, and (d) and several other offences. Presented that Thomas de Herlawe prosecuted an assize of novel disseisin against Nicholas de Knynewarton concerning an annual rent of 20 p.s. Plea pending, one John fitz Walter knight on August 2,1345 undertook to maintain Nicholas in return for a grant of the land subject to the distraint for the annual rent. Since Thomas would not withdraw his suit, John and others by false covin sent Simon Spryng and many others to the number of 100 armed in warlike mode and took many animals there. Presented that Thomas, the brother of the parson of Raundes, in 1351 went to the Tempsford to the home of Geoffrey de Drayton with 300 armed men and seized Geoffrey; they then went through the town breaking the doors and window of the church and entered the rectory, drank the beer and emptied the rest and, in warlike mode, took many others in the town from place to place in Bedfordshire and detained them for 15 days. Presented that John Olyve Bollokhirde with others on 10 September 1347 in warlike mode went to the house of John Mounteney in Stamford Rivers to kill Mounteney if he could be found; he took John Byzoundene servant and beat him to death, burned the cut grain, and feloniously took wheat. Presented that William de Harpetre with others (Roger de Leycester: [9]) came to the home of Geoffrey de Drayton at Temseford armed in warlike mode and took and detained him in prison for 15 days in 131. And he entered the rectory there and stole from the rector goods worth 40s. [10] rcp E1353 A: Norfolk. John Daniel de Walsokene v. John de Brunisleee, Edmund brother of John de Brunislee, Thomas Parker de Shepedham, John Clerk de Wysebech, Thomas Kaunville, Thomas Bcoun, John de Derby, and John Charnell. Besieging his house in Walsokene in warlike manner, threatening to kill him, and taking his goods. Degendants pleaded official action. Convicted by jury with damages of 200 p.s. Presented that Richard de Hynton, William de Hynton, and Thomas de Hynton in November 1351 at night went to Raylegh in the presence of the king and armed in warlike manner at the house of Isabella late with of John de Bedeford raped and abducted Isabella. Despite the king's proclamation against confederations that disturb the peace in markets and fairs, defendants threatened and assault in warlike manner the plaintiff on his business between Allerton Mauleverer and Hawkswell and at Bedale. [13], [14] rcp M1354 B: Hertfordshire. Presented that on August 2, 1349 at Puckeridge a certain Nicholas, chaplain of Thomas Leggy now mayor of London assaulted John Tiffe of Puckeridge. Thomas Leggy and Simon Fraunceys citizen of London were in the company of that chaplain. Leggy then sent an unknown servant to London, but to whom the servant was sent is unknown. In response to Leggy's sending, however, a multitude of armed men numbering 500 armed in warlike manner in an illicit conventicle assembled on 3 August to the great disturbance of the countryside; they said that the reason for coming was to burn Puckeridge to the ground, so the inhabitants of Puckeridge fled and took their goods with them. Presented that Thomas Moigne night in 1349 imprisoned Ralph de Wetebache at Brockhampton and held him until he enfeoffed him of 12 acres and an annual rent of 13s4d. In 1356 Moigne in warlike manner at Hereford where the assize justices were seated entered the house of Thomas Trillek dean of the bishop of Hereford and assaulted David the janitor of the dean and so threatened the bishop's men that they dared not leave the house. NOT warlike conduct, but this is still probably the best place to put it: It was presented that William de Molyns and others on the Monday after Michaelmas 31 Edward III in the forest of Clare by Franham met John Watche, who had divers rolls and muniments touching the lord king both concerning the lands and tenements of lord John de Molyns being in the king's hands and concerning divers articles of which John was indicted before the lord king. And when they saw that John Watche had with him those documents and that Watche was a minister of the sheriff of Buckinghamshire and of counsel of those who followed for the king against John de Molyns, they threatened that they would destroy Watche unless he withdrew from the society and counsel of the king's ministers and of those who follwed against lord John de Molyns. From fear and by those threats Watche swore that he would thenceforth be of counsel and aid of the John de Molyns to get him acquitted of all articles and they all swore an oath to confederate against the king. Thereafter they broke into a royal manor and into the tower "ubi secreta dicti Johannis extiterunt" and did as they pleased. [18] rcp See under King's Council, T1359 A. M1360 A: Middlesex. Presentment that John de Brokhampton parson of Ickenham and Stephen Benet and Robert le Carter servants of John together with many others unknown in warlike manner armed and with bows drawn assaulted various servants of Reginald, bishop of Worcester in 34 Edward III.
